Sand for PaversAs mentioned previously,sandis used in 2 parts of the installation process – the bedding and as a filler material. First, a bed for thepaversmust be excavated and filled with crushed stone or gravel. A layer ofbedding sandis then spread on top of the base material tocushionthepaversand keep them in place.
Concrete sandworks very well, however,mason sandis sometimes used instead. Neither of these types ofsand, however, is the best fit for filling inpaver joints. A loose-fillsandwill wash away over time or when it is exposed to heavy rains.
